Strep Throat In Toddlers

Strep throat is an acute inflammation of the pharynx - the frequent manifestation of acute respiratory diseases. Usually viral in origin, it can also be linked to β-hemolytic streptococcus group A, Mycoplasma pneumonia or other pathogens.

Usually, when children complain of sore throat pain and discomfort in the throat (burning, tickling, itching), coughing, itching and sometimes pain in the ears. Infants to complain about any discomfort can, but attentive parents pay attention to the troubled behavior, sleep disturbance, appetite loss. Pharyngitis may be combined with other manifestations of acute respiratory infections, such as runny nose, cough, fever, conjunctivitis.

Diagnosis of pharyngitis is made by examination pharynx: marked hyperemia, edema and infiltration of the mucosa posterior wall of the pharynx, vela pharyngeal arches, and sometimes the soft palate. Lateral pharyngitis determined hyperemia and edema of the lateral pharyngeal ridges. Distinguish viral from bacterial pharyngitis, relying only on physical examination data, it is difficult. In both cases, pharynges scope mucosa of the pharynx can be weakly or strongly hyperemic inflamed and covered with foil or purulent exudate. Fever, cervical lymphadenopathy and leukocytosis observed and viral, and bacterial pharyngitis, but perhaps the last time they were more pronounced.

Therapeutic measures for sore throat include the following manipulations.

* Gargle with antiseptic, herbal solutions 3 - 4 times a day after meals.
* Irrigation throat antiseptic or antibiotic-containing aerosols 2 - 3 doses of 2 - 4 times a day.
* Absorption of tablets or lozenges with anti-bacterial, analgesic, soothing agent.
* In bacterial pharyngitis should be the appointment of systemic antibiotics.

Strep throat in toddlers cannot gargle or dissolve tablets, so they assigned only to excessive drinking and irrigation of the throat antiseptic. It should be noted that children under the age of two, all sprays should be used with caution because of the possibility of spasm of the glottis.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the complex local conservative events held for children with acute pharyngitis.

The study covered the period from October to December 2002. Under our supervision there were 32 children (15 boys and 17 girls) aged from 5 to 15 years (average age - 9 years) with a diagnosis: acute pharyngitis. In most cases, pharyngitis is a manifestation of acute respiratory viral infection. Children with SARS, which was complicated other pathology of upper respiratory tract or upper respiratory tract (sinusitis, acute catarrhal otitis media), as well as patients with angina were not included in the study.
